When I’m not turning up the heat in the kitchen or keeping things crystal clear at JPS Pool & Spa Services (you guys know us as JPS!), I’m out exploring the best of what the Garden State has to offer. Running a business and cooking up a storm means summer gets hectic. There is nothing quite like a classic Jersey Shore day trip to reset the mind and find some inspiration.
From the very southern tip of the state to my absolute favorite hidden sanctuary, here are my top three day trips along the shore, capped off with my ultimate secret getaway.
3. Cape May: History, Wine, and Rail Biking
Cape May is an absolute gem that perfectly blends historic Victorian charm with modern-day adventure. If you are planning a trip, make sure to walk through the bustling Washington Street Mall to check out the local boutiques. From there, head over to Sunset Beach or take a drive down the local wine trail to sample some incredible regional pours.
If you want to get your heart pumping, you have to try rail biking. You can pedal custom-built tandem or quad rail cars along the old orphan railroad tracks with Revolution Rail Co. It is a gorgeous 4-mile round trip that takes you right alongside the beautiful Garrett Family Preserve.
2. Point Pleasant: The Ultimate Crew Hangout
Point Pleasant is my absolute go-to halfway point when I want to gather all my friends together. It has the perfect high-energy beach vibe but remains incredibly friendly for young families. You can easily spend the day soaking up the sun on the sand, hitting the boardwalk, or grabbing an incredible seafood lunch or dinner.
The Rebel Chef Insider Tip: Skip the crowds for an hour and hang out at Inlet Park. It is the absolute best vantage point to sit back and watch the boats cruise in and out of the Manasquan Inlet.
1. Wildwood: My All-Time Favorite Shore Spot
This is it—the heavyweight champion of the Jersey Shore. Stepping into Wildwood is like firing up a time machine and transporting yourself straight back to the neon-soaked 1950s. The mid-century architecture and retro energy are completely unmatched. It has world-class entertainment for all ages. You can go bar hopping, walk the legendary boardwalk, ride the screaming coasters on the piers, or just relax on some of the widest beaches in the state.
The Rebel Chef Vibe: Naturally, as a pool guy, I appreciate a great swim-up bar! Grab a stool at the Oasis Pool, sip on a cold drink, and let the stress melt away. Staying in a retro motel here feels surprisingly peaceful and serene amid all the excitement.
🏝️ My Ultimate Secret Spot: Barnegat Light State Park
When I need to completely escape the noise, disconnect, and ensure I won't be bothered, I head straight to the northern tip of Long Beach Island. Barnegat Light State Park is vast, quiet, and profoundly peaceful.
It is home to "Old Barney," a majestic, 167-year-old lighthouse that was built between 1857 and 1858. This historic beacon has essentially been resurrected twice; the current tower replaced an original 1835 structure that tragically collapsed into the sea due to relentless beach erosion, and the beacon itself was triumphantly relit in 2009 after decades of darkness. If you want to just sit back, stare at the breakers, and enjoy the salt air in peace, this is your sanctuary.
Now that I’ve shared my ultimate Jersey Shore road map, I want to hear from you. Whether you know me from the kitchen or look to JPS to keep your backyard oasis running smooth all summer, we all need that perfect shore escape.
